"Conversation should be pleasant without scurrility, witty without affectation, free without indecency, learned without conceitedness, novel without falsehood."

The day is not far off that I am going to be afraid to sneeze in public. I may sneeze in the wrong direction, this may cause someone huge trauma, mental and emotional problems, and then my ass goes to court, they sue the hell out of me, and we all go off and lead our sued filled lives. Am I getting over the top? I really wish I was. Unfortunately this is big business. No longer do we as a general public have to suffer in silence. We can sue for just about anything, whether they be physical or emotional, it is fashionable. It has employers jumping through hoops. If they scratch their arse it has to be recorded in about a million different places. We as people have far more power than we have ever had before, and what do we do with it? We do what is natural to us, we take advantage of it. We fall over, and there was once a time where we would get up as quickly as possible, hang our head in shame, and run off as fast as we can. Now we crease over in pain, roll over a few times, and think up in our heads what we can spend the compensation on.

Now don't get me wrong, I am all for getting something for nothing. I think every now and then the average joe needs to have a little bit of luck. I just think this is reaching the point where it is verging on the ridiculous. What happens when someone really does hurt themselves, and they can't work, and they are in an awful situation. It's like the boy who cried wolf it will catch up with us. We don't appreciate good service anymore, it encourages us to look for the negative in things. We no longer want to have a meal we enjoy, we want to find something wrong with it, maybe something wasn't cooked properly, and we get something for nothing. We see it as a victory. It is a fine line between right and wrong. Some people don't care about that anymore.

Now there is a huge difference between emotional trauma and physical injury. Physical injury can be easier to prove. Alot easier. I think teachers have it difficult. We trust them with our children. We give them our permission to teach them, punish them. Be role models. In todays society if a teacher looks at a pupil the wrong way, they could be heading to court. Headteachers are difficult to find. They get it in the neck when these pupils return years later claiming to emotional trauma, or I slipt down these steps three years ago, and it has given me a limp. I mean come on people get a grip! We are digging a hole for ourselves. My sister works at a hospital, and they have to record everything. We are taking away from what they do best, giving care. So much time is now taken up with paperwork, and covering their backs, they have less time to do what they are paid for, give us care. So who wins in the long run? A payout for a small amount, or happy workers, who give you the time and attention you deserve.

I could not agree more. I though it was just America that was like that but it seems from what you said that it has spread the world over. Did you ever hear about that lady from middle america someplace and she was too over-weight to fit into a booth a Dennys so she sued for weight descrimination? She won too. something like 3 million dollars. It is just awful.
I think you can sneeze if you need to, and if soemone doesn't say " bless you" just sue them. hee-hee.
I love you stuff..I read it everyday!

Oh jeez! Did no one mention the word 'DIET' to her! It's like them kids who sued Mcdonalds, for force feeding them, it's ridiculous and it's spreading like a disease!

Hehe! I like your style!

I think a lot of people are just money hungry really, and now they know than can do this, and get a pay off for virtually anything - they do. I'm not sure I can blame them. I guess it would seem stupid to most to pass up such a great opportunity to make some cash!! Although it is getting somewhat ridiculous...hopefully it's just another trend and will pass..?

Good article honey .

Ok i agree with you too. It seems today everyone has a huge chip on theyre shoulder. The reason thit happens so easily though is because everyone is becoming more aware of theyre rights and the laws that back them up. Now while all that is well and good i think there should be some restriction there. The fat lady and Dennys for instance, it shouldnt have gone through with the judge for the simple fact that no one is flippin forcing anyone to eat, and if ur to flippin fat to fit in the booth, then that should tell ya that u need to go on a diet. But with the certain laws that there are she came out of it a winner just becuz we have certain unalienable rights. Our "rights" are privledges. Our government doesnt have to give us anything. At anytime America could change over to communism, no one thinks about that, so they takegranted of things and take advantage of things because they know they can get away with it which is bull. Back to you though, i agree with everything you said, and congrats on your work, very good stuff.

I think what we need is a little more 'give' in the world... but not in the way half the world probably would like it. A little more giving of the benefit of the doubt, giving someone a break, giving a care about someone else besides ourselves... stuff like that. I can't see myself ever sueing somebody else just on principle. There's already enough of that going around. Public Liability insurance is rediculous in this country because of it. It's probably the case all over. And don't even get me started on the rules and laws coming about to supposedly protect companies, organisations and us from 'ourselves'. All because of selfish people really.
It's like the boy who cried wolf it will catch up with us

I think it already has.

I don't blame them, but it is getting beyond ridiculous, and it is restricting people in jobs where they can be held liable.

The reason thit happens so easily though is because everyone is becoming more aware of theyre rights and the laws that back them up

Yep it is a good thing. We should be aware of such things.

and if ur to flippin fat to fit in the booth, then that should tell ya that u need to go on a diet

...my thoughts exactly!

Our "rights" are privledges

People seem to forget that.

i agree with everything you said, and congrats on your work, very good stuff.

Thankyou, and welcome to JU

I wish everyone had that outlook! I'm sure it will go full circle though, and things will start to get better.

You are soooooooo right!
There is no such thing as an, "act of God," any more.
Some human has to be responsible for my accident.

I can remember, Brother Jeffries, turning around and nuckling, some one in the head with a, black board eraser, for fooling around in his class.
Oh my Gawd! Could you imagine if that happened today? The students parents would own the school.

The fat lady in Denny's is a hoot. Denny's should have stated their case as being, "it's by design that our booths don't fit fat people." The reason being, they don't need to be eating for a while."
"We're trying to save their lives."
(tongue in cheek)

Good article, lady.

Teachers have no power, and that is what is failing our children. People just don't seem to realise.

We're trying to save their lives."

.....hilarious!
