"Conversation should be pleasant without scurrility, witty without affectation, free without indecency, learned without conceitedness, novel without falsehood."

I'm a smiley happy person. I don't see the point of walking round with a face that resembles a smacked arse. Smiling at people takes no effort at all, yet it usually, even if it is in the smallest way brightens up someones day. Why is it in todays society if you're friendly to people, people have this horrible habit of thinking you are slightly retarded. I made a promise to myself, a few years ago, that I would make an effort to smile at people in the street. To smile at everyone, because a smile costs nothing. Now on the most part, people respond to this well, and return the gesture. Which then gives me a nice feeling inside. I know I'm sounding lame here, but it's so true. Then there are some people who look at me like I have mental problems. There are others that actually look at me with mistrust. Like I must be smiling at them, because I'm after something, or I'm about to do something psycho.

Has the world really come to this, where even smiling at a stranger, can have a negative impact. I refuse to stop smiling at people, it makes me feel good, and what else am I supposed to do? Scowl at people, just so they feel comfortable with me. Just so I fit in with everyone else? Well I have hope in human nature, and I am sure there are people out there who appreciate a nice smile. I do have my off days, where I don't feel like smiling. Where I don't want to smile. I still don't go around giving people dirty looks. I just think it is nice to be nice. So people of JU, do something for me please? Smile.

Great post! Likewise, I decided that I'd be the first to ask the clerk serving me in the stores "How are you today?". I find most of them appreciate it, since they are *required* to ask their customers the same. Just another way of spreading a little bit-o-love in the world.

Sally,

I belong to the smile club too!!.....A smile can have a domino effect that can go on forever.....as so can a nasty attitude......me, I'd rather spread a smile than a scowl. And yes, people can question your motives......but the more they see you smiling the more they begin to believe you are just a nice, happy person and they might just start smiling too!!

You have a great attitude to life, Sally!!
