"Conversation should be pleasant without scurrility, witty without affectation, free without indecency, learned without conceitedness, novel without falsehood."

The internet is introducing us to new phenomenons everyday. We are a generation embracing the joys of music downloads, blogs and all kinds of other new technologies. We are enjoying what this technology has to offer us, and taking advantage of it as much as possible. YouTube was launched in Dec 2005, and is basically video filesharing software. Just as MySpace and podcasting were huge (and still are) in 2005, consumer video websites are set to be the hit for 2006. YouTube plans to bust the paid for download market by posting a copy of every music single video ever made, on its site. Taking on industry giants Apple itunes, without even a blink of an eye. YouTube has more than 80million videos viewed each day, and is now the 15th most visited website in the world. You can view the likes of Ronaldhino's football tricks, bedroom renditions of Bollywood dances, footage of Kate Moss's infamous indescretion. It even has 300,000 views of George Galloway speaking at July's Hands off Lebanon demo. A chance to maybe get younger generations interested in politics.

Part of the attraction of YouTube is that your average Joe on the street can put up their videos and enjoy the interaction from other highly creative individuals. They can comment, and rate what they see. It gives people the chance who might not normally get it to show what they can do. Like MySpace did, they have encouraged a highly creative community to interact with each other, and who can turn their noses up at that? Surprisingly it is mostly the amateur posts that are popular on YouTube. People are attracted to the fact that this could be their next door neighbour doing this, and just what goes on behind closed doors. It is just the voyeuristic aspect of video sites that attract alot of people.

So is this the beginning of the end for polished media? Of course it isn't! There is room for both in our lives. Just because I read and write a blog doesn't mean that I am going to stop watching the news or reading newspapers, that is ridiculous. It is just giving people another option, and another outlet to have. The media is such a powerful tool, and has the ability to touch our lives in so many different ways, that we should take advantage of it in every way possible. I firmly believe that. This is just another way of doing it. People can make films, write blogs, do what they want, and post it on the internet and within moments it is there for millions of people to view, and people can respond to it if they wish. That's a totally different look of the media, and it is creating a new genre.

If you would like to see what makes YouTube so special, take a look at this....this is currenly the most watched clip on there, with more than 1,671,705 views in the last 3 months. Enjoy folks

In the 90s, the dot com was the rage and everyone was going to make a fortune, and they almost all went bust.

Based on recent activity, analyst put YouTubes value at about 4-5 BILLION dollars.  Not bad for a start up!

Tom's an arrogant schmuck who got too big for his shoes.

...wish I had shares in YouTube.

On another note, I bet there's a whole swag of people who are now glad that MS included the "Movie Maker" software.

I've been a YouTube fan for some time now. I'm still amazed, however, by the amount of people who do absolutely stupid, dumb or dangerous things in front of a camera. I wrote an article for a magazine years ago that suggested these accidents, mishaps or whatever happen not in spite of the camera but BECAUSE of it. Now YouTube is cashing in on this phenomena. I too wish I had shares...
